    • The courses in Gross Anatomy are studied in depth with conceptual understanding both regionally and systematically; emphasis is laid on learning the application of the information in clinical sciences.

    • The course in Microscopic Anatomy is designed to impart an in depth information on general and systemic Microanatomy; emphasis is laid on fine structure of tissues and organs correlating it to its normal and disturb functions.

    • The Developmental Anatomy program encompasses general and special embryology. Growth and differentiation of blastomeres in different lineage and directions. Their regulation to form different organs and tissues is considered with special emphasis in general embryology. Detailed study of normal process of organogenesis and it deviation to produce congenital abnormalities are the part of the special embryology. The details of the factors, genetic and environmental, which produce abnormal development are studied with special emphasis.

    • Neuroanatomy covers morphological characteristics of Brain and Spinal Cord in details. Spinal cord, medulla oblongata, pons and midbrain are studied in depth using their cross sections at different levels; ascending and descending tracts, cranial nerves, their nuclei shall be studied in detail with particular emphasis on their functions and the clinical picture produce on account of different lesions. Further, in depth study of cerebrum and cerebellum with special consideration of their functions in health and disease shall be undertaken. A conceptual understanding of autonomic nervous system shall be aimed so as to understand the regulations of internal environment of the body. Mechanism of control of functions by Nervous System through different Neurotransmitter shall also be studied in depth.

    • The above programs are reinforced by relevant practicals and interactive lectures with full participation of the students to foster communication skill so that they become competent and confident teachers.

    • Two Learning Modules, one in first year and the other in second year are also included; these modules are selected from a comprehensive list of elective minors; the choice of there selection shall be directly relevant to the research topic of the candidate.

    • The student shall select the topic of research, write the synopsis and get it approved with 3 - 4 months after admission. He/she shall also run a pilot project to identify the problem areas of the stipulated research and find out the solution to overcome the problems. This is the requirement of 1st year of the program in addition to the course work.

    • Second year is by and large, devoted to carry out the research work, record the findings and finalizing the final draft of the investigations so that the work is ready for evaluation before the turn of the 2nd year. This is in addition to the course work for the 2nd elective.

    • Throughout the course the students are subjected to regular formative evaluations.

    • At the end of M.Phil program, the bright and deserving candidate may be offered to undergo course work for advance level of research leading to Ph.D degree; the Thesis would be evaluated by a team of highly qualified and reputed teachers/researchers in the field, including at least two external examiners from technically advanced countries and a comparable number from with in Pakistan; the candidate shall be consider to be successful only on successfully defending the work publically and before a panel of examiners.

Programs

The M.Phil programs shall be a full time, in house training courses comprising Lectures, Tutorials, Demonstrations, Journal Club Meetings, Presentations and participation in Seminars. The candidate will be subjected to continuous internal evaluation and their progress and attendance will be regularly monitored. The services of National and International examiners will be utilized for final evaluation of the candidates and their research work.

Facilities

The department is equipped with high quality Microscopes, Microtome, Cryostat, Tissue Processor, Incubator, Water bath, full collection of Histology teaching slides, Anatomical Models and other teaching aids such as dissections films. The department possesses a good-sized departmental library. The students are also trained in “Prosection” so as to help them in developing expertise to dissect cadavers and prepare museum specimen.

Future Plans

  • We plan to admit 1-2 candidates each year for Ph.D and admissible number of candidates for M.Phil programs. Human resource development is being taken at priority; this is directed to developing Research, Teaching and Medical Education expertise among the trainees. It is also planned to gradually make the departmental library richer and acquire more models, teaching aids and Research Equipment.

  • Some of the Ph.D/M.Phil courses will be taught in collaboration with other subject experts available in UHS as well from other institutions. The faculty will also participate in teaching M.Sc students in Medical Bio Technology and B.Sc Nursing programs. It is proposed to produce not only well qualified, experienced and research oriented teachers in Basic Medical Sciences but also competent professionals in Technical and Nursing fields.

Research Activities

  • One Ph.D student has successfully completed the program and obtained the degree.

  • Seventeen M.Phil students have been awarded the degree after successfully completing their work.

  • In addition, two students have completed their course work and submitted their Theses for evaluation; they are awaiting the report on their Theses before defending them.
