Department of Physiology & Cell Biology

Introduction

The Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, an integral part of the basic medical sciences division at the University of Health Sciences, with a strong interdisciplinary approach, focuses on developing and delivering quality postgraduate programs. The Department provides an excellent environment for postgraduate studies, attempts to integrate molecular, cellular and systems approaches to physiological sciences. The Department offers PhD program and an MPhil program leading to PhD degree.

Dr.Khalid Parvez Lone
Professor and Head of Department
M.Sc. (Pb.), M.I. Biol. (London), Ph.D. (Birmingham)F.Z.S.P.

The mission of the department is to:
  • Create new standards in high quality teaching and research in the area of physiological sciences and inculcate world class research culture among students and faculty members
  • Design and develop postgraduate program of the highest quality with a solid conceptual understanding of physiological sciences and analytical capabilities
  • Attract, produce and retain highly qualified faculty in the field of physiological sciences
  • Promote research interaction with public agencies and industry through outreach and scientific leadership
  • Organize symposia, seminars and special lectures in relevant disciplines at national and international levels.

Programs

The postgraduate program at UHS aspires to higher education and research training in selected areas of Physiology and Cell Biology. The M.Phil program is a full time, on hand training course with Lectures, Tutorials, Demonstrations, Journal Club Meetings, Presentations and participation in Seminars. The candidate is subjected to continuous internal evaluation and progress and attendance is regularly monitored.

Specializations: areas of teaching, training and research

  • Molecular and cell physiology
  • Systemic physiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Reproductive and developmental biology
  • Environmental physiology

Facilities

The Department has three well established Labs namely Main Physiology Lab, Resource Lab and Molecular & Cell Biology Lab. Currently the laboratory is equipped with modern research facilities for DNA studies, proteomics, immunoassay, radioimmunoassay, DNA sequencing analysis, Karyotyping, imaging, blood and tissue chemistry. Also instruments like Immunofluorescent and inverted research microscopes, Horizontal and vertical electrophoresis, HPLC, bone profiler, and biosaftey laminar flow cabinet are continuously used for various research experiments. The department also possesses a good-sized departmental library.

Scientific Collaboration

In addition to a meaningful interaction with other departments of basic and clinical sciences within UHS and its affiliated colleges and institutions, the Department is collaborating in training and research with other national biomedical institutions like the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Lahore (INMOL), National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) and Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital and Research Center Lahore. Linkages are being developed with foreign institutions both for collaborative research and for short term training of personnel in specialized techniques and procedures.

Future Plans

  • The department is looking forward to proceed 3 to 4 M.Phil students for Ph.D. degree each year.
  • The UHS is developing a state-of-the-art Endocrinology & Reproductive science centre under the umbrella of HEC to provide backup research in reproductive health and metabolic dysfunctions especially in the local context. The centre shall house core facilities for research involving PCR, immunoassay, radioimmunoassay, IVF, Karyotyping and imaging.

Research Activities

  • One Ph.D. and nine M.Phil students have successfully completed and defended their thesis.
  • At present five Ph.D. and 14 M.Phil students are working on different research projects.
