Pharmacology Department

Introduction

Department of Pharmacology is a part of pre-clinical sciences division of University of Health Sciences which makes an integral link between basic medical sciences and clinical sciences.

The department supports Post-Graduate education by providing a highly interdisciplinary framework for individual and thematic training programs within both classical and newly emerging areas in the biomedical sciences.

UHS is establishing contacts with foreign universities for training and research activities for postgraduate students and faculty members.

Mission
Dr. Muhammad Shahzad
Assistant Professor
Ph.D (Xi’an Jiaotong University, China)
  • To provide solid understanding of basic pharmacology and to prepare our postgraduates with upto date knowledge of pharmacology to pursue careers as independent scientists, pharmacologists and as good research oriented teachers
  • To prepare the postgraduates for life time learning and problem solving
  • To discover new biomedical knowledge and to apply the insights gained form basic sciences studies for further advancement in therapeutics strategies.

Working

The department is running MPhil and PhD. programs. The faculty members and postgraduate research scholars are actively involved in fundamental pharmacological research. Speciality areas of study include:-

    • Molecular & Structural Pharmacology
    • New pharmacological products from Herbal & Botanicals
    • Pharmacognosy
    • Pharmacogenetics
Teaching is based on:-
  • Lectures
  • Tutorials
  • Journal Club Discussions
  • Individual and Group Presentations
  • Seminars
  • Problem Based Learning (PBL)

Facilities

The department has a well equipped laboratory for postgraduate practical training and research work in pharmacology and therapeutics. Pharmacology laboratory is further being equipped with HPLC, GCMS, rotary evaporator and Soxhlet Extractor.

Scientific Collaboration

Modern pharmacology seeks an understanding of how drugs work at molecular and cellular level and attempts to lay the ground works for discovery and development of next generation of therapeutics. Because pharmacology is based on therapeutics, we have close ties with other departments with in the UHS and its affiliated colleges and institutions. The department will coordinate and collaborate in training and research with other biomedical national institutions like the Pakistan Council of scientific institute of Research (PCSIR), National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) and HEJ Karachi.
Internationally we have close collaboration with Xi’an Jiaotong University, China

Future Plans

Department may be associated with a latest drug testing laboratory providing chances of more collaboration with clinical sciences in the field of therapeutic drug monitoring and with the pharmaceutical industry for providing services in quality control and collaboration in research field.

Research Activities

Our faculty's research interest range from molecules to cells, tissues, organs and whole organisms. The MPhil/PhD scholars as a part of their qualifying examination prepare and defend research proposals. The current research strengths of the department of pharmacology include:-

  • Pharmacological activity in herbal and botanical compounds/products
  • New approaches to drug delivery systems
  • Therapeutic modalities in systemic Pharmacotherapy
  • Molecular Pharmacology
Students are admitted in M.Phil and Ph.D. Programs each year according to schedule.
