Seminar on “Human Disaster Management” at University of Health Sciences on 26th of January, 2012

The theme of the seminar is “Role of Academia and Media in Human Disaster Management”.

Pakistan , unfortunately has been hit by both natural and man created disasters over the past few years. If we look in the past, ever since the unfortunate earthquake in 2005, series of repeated droughts and floods, Displaced populations of Swat, and repeated terrorist attacks, we as a nation and you as a part of an organisation have been directly or indirectly involved in contributing towards managing these disasters.

Managing Disasters has now become a science with its own ethos, requirements and outcomes. The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK (LSTM) had initiated a Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (DHA) since 2004, which has been duly recognized and accredited by international organisations like United Nation etc. LSTM, under the leadership of Prof. Timothy O’ Dempsey and Prof. Barry Munslow is keen to start this Diploma in Pakistan. In the backdrop of what has been going on in Pakistan, there is a need to build capacity of individuals who are involved in managing such disasters. This seminar is being arranged to share experiences from Government organisations like NDMA, ERRA, PDMA and Rescue 1122 and also from NGO's. This will also be an opportunity to assess the need for having academics added to the whole system of management. During the seminar, there would be two sessions after the inauguration.

In the first session, NDMA, ERRA PDMA, Rescue 1122 representatives/guest speakers will share their experiences or their plan for Pakistan. Prof. Tim will introduce DHA in that session. In the post lunch session, Media /journalist shall be invited to a panel discussion on the topic: "Media as a Partner in Disaster Management".

It will include question answer session. The whole concept is to get together policy makers, system providers, media representatives and aid agencies to come to a platform and discuss the need for having an academic link to the management of human disasters. I would very much appreciate if you could disseminate this information to other NGO's associated with PHF.
