The Department of Biochemistry has been a core academic unit of the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore since the University’s establishment in 2002. Recognizing the central role of biochemistry as a link between basic sciences and clinical medicine, the department has focused on high-quality teaching, research, and training from the outset. In 2008, it launched postgraduate programs leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry, which are duly recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC).
The department provides advanced academic and research training in the molecular basis of life, metabolism, enzymology, and disease processes, alongside clinical applications relevant to diagnostics and therapeutics. Its programs are structured to meet international standards, equipping graduates with skills in molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and modern diagnostic technologies. Research is a cornerstone of training, with projects focusing on major health challenges in Pakistan, including cancer biology, genetic and metabolic disorders, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and infectious diseases.
Faculty and students actively contribute to research publications, national and international conferences, and collaborative projects with clinical and scientific institutions. The department also emphasizes translational research, linking laboratory findings to patient care and healthcare delivery.
Graduates of the department hold academic, research, and clinical positions across Pakistan and abroad, reflecting its reputation as a leading center for postgraduate education in biochemistry. With state-of-the-art laboratories, an interdisciplinary approach, and a commitment to innovation, the department continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening medical education and biomedical research in the country.
