Introduction
The Institute of Nursing at the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, was established in 2007 to address the acute shortage of skilled nursing professionals in Pakistan. Since its inception, the Institute has served as a premier centre for nursing education, clinical training, research, and professional development, producing graduates equipped to meet the evolving healthcare needs of Pakistan and beyond.
The Institute was founded with a vision to transform nursing into a strong, research-oriented, and globally recognized profession. It aims to provide rigorous academic programmes, foster research and innovation, and nurture professional values of compassion, ethics, and integrity. Over the years, the Institute has played a pivotal role in developing skilled nurses who contribute significantly in clinical care, leadership, policy-making, and academia.
Academic excellence is ensured through programmes aligned with the standards of the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PN&MC), the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, and international frameworks. With a strong foundation in theory and extensive practical exposure through integrated clinical placements at affiliated hospitals, students are trained to provide safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. The inclusion of competency-based curricula and advanced pedagogical methods such as simulation-based teaching ensures that our graduates are well-prepared for real-world challenges.
Research is a cornerstone of the Institute’s philosophy. Faculty and students are engaged in high-quality studies addressing pressing issues such as maternal and child health, patient safety, oncology nursing, and community healthcare. Through journal clubs, conferences, and workshops, the Institute fosters critical inquiry and evidence-based practice, while publications in peer-reviewed journals contribute to the national and international body of nursing knowledge.
The Institute also takes pride in its modern facilities, including state-of-the-art simulation labs, skills labs, digital libraries, and dedicated research spaces. A holistic learning environment is complemented by co-curricular and professional development opportunities that enable students to enhance their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Beyond academics, the Institute is deeply committed to community engagement. Health awareness programmes, maternal and child health campaigns, and collaborations with healthcare organisations reflect its commitment to public service and social responsibility. By aligning its initiatives with global and national healthcare priorities, the Institute is contributing meaningfully to improving healthcare outcomes and advancing the nursing profession in Pakistan.
Looking ahead, the Institute of Nursing at UHS is expanding its academic portfolio with the introduction of a PhD in Nursing, designed to build advanced research capacity and leadership in health policy. Through its dedication to innovation, quality, and compassion, the Institute is shaping the next generation of nurses who will lead healthcare transformation in Pakistan and make their mark worldwide.
